Support To Civil Society > Fund Management > Eugene Saldanha Memorial Fund

Introduction

In honour of its late founder, CAF Southern Africa launched the Eugene Saldanha Memorial Fund. This Fund solicits donations from the general public and puts these towards issues of social justice that were close to Eugene’s heart. The Trust was launched in Johannesburg in November 2007.

Governance and legal structure of the Fund

The Fund has been constituted within CAF Southern Africa as the Eugene Saldanha Memorial Fund. Five committee members have been appointed, with responsibility for the governance of the Fund. The committee decides upon funding focus, funding requests, and to deal with any other fund matters. CAF Southern Africa provides a Secretariat service to the Fund.

Fund Focal Areas

In recognition of Eugene’s passion and commitment to journalistic integrity, the committee agreed to focus the Eugene Saldanha Memorial Fund on support for increased and improved media coverage of social justice issues – especially by young and aspiring journalists. Following a consultative workshop with media experts the committee has further decided to find a particular niche where the fund could make a modest contribution. The committee is therefore investigating the relevance and viability of establishing or partnering on a Fellowship which will provide the opportunity for at least two young journalists to document and publish on social justice issues.
