NPO Collaboration Dialogue - 8 September 2016

As an organising partner, CAFSA invites you to attend the upcoming NPO Collaboration Dialogue, which will focus on "proposed changes to the NPO Act and implications for the sector", a topic critical to all civil organisations.

Since 2012 the Department of Social Development (DSD) has planned to amend the existing Non-Profit Organisations Act (NPO Act). After several drafts of the proposed changes, nothing further was heard from DSD until earlier this year when proposed changes were presented by DSD at a conference in Johannesburg.  In order to fully inform NPO Collaboration Dialogue participants on the proposed changes and their implications for the sector, we will be hosting  a panel discussion, comprising prominent leaders of South African and international civil society, together with the director from DSD’s NPO office responsible for the legislative processes regarding the Bill:
  • Dr Kumi Naidoo: South African human rights activist; founder director of SANGOCO; founding chair of the Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP); past General Secretary of CIVICUS, past International Executive Director of Greenpeace, presently founder director of the new Africa Civil Society Centre.
  • Mpho Mngxitama; Director, NPO Information and Registration Management, Department of Social Development (DSD).
  • Mandeep Tiwana: A lawyer specialising in legislation affecting civil society freedoms, and currently Head of Policy and Research at CIVICUS, Mandeep has contributed extensively to international civil society issues, including as advisor to the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative.
  • Corlett Letlojane: Executive Director, Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA). With over 20 years’ experience in human rights law, Corlett also serves on a number of Continental organisations including the African Commission Study Group on Freedom of Association & Assembly, the Pan African Human Rights Defenders Network and the Coalition for An Effective African Court on Human and People's Rights.
