Our Team

The CAF Southern Africa team members combine a passion for increasing giving, philanthropy, corporate social investment, research and advocacy with years of experience in both the NGO and corporate sector.


Gills Picture

Gill Bates, Chief Executive Officer

Gill assumed the role of CAF Southern Africa's CEO in January 2017. Gill has some 25 years experience, in the corporate, parastatal and non-profit space. She is a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) specialist and has managed the trusts and foundations of a number of blue chip entities, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).She has had extensive experience in the Financial Services Sector, from a CSI perspective.


Her experience includes Governance and Compliance, B-BBEE scorecard consulting, Sustainability Reporting, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (MER), Research, Policy Formulation and Implementation, Strategy Formulation and Implementation, Programme and Project Management, and Fundraising. Gill held the position of part-time facilitator, at a Johannesburg business school and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Social Work, an Honours degree in Education Social Work, and a Master’s Degree in Public and Development Management.


Meena Parbhoo, Finance Manager

Meena Parbhoo joined CAFSA as Finance Manager in January 2018. Before that, she was positioned at Sci-Bono, where she spent ten years, and saw the budget grow from R12 million in 2007 to R1 billion in 2016. Meena has spent over 37 years in the field of finance in different sectors, specifically the corporate and NPO environments. 


Some of the organisations she has worked for previously, heading up the finance portfolios, are National Brands Ltd., the Joint Enrichment Project, a youth development organisation, a project of the South African Council of Churches.


During her time at Sci-Bono, her biggest achievement was to reach unqualified audits for the organisation. She attributes this feat not only her abilities and her approach to work, but to the solid team that she worked with.


It was CAFSA’s largely vision to strengthen civil society that drew Meena to CAFSA, as it is a vision that she fully supports and believes in, both personally and professionally. Her goal at CAFSA is to contribute to this vision by ensuring that CAFSA’s governance and financial management systems continue to be strong, credible and beyond reproach, so that the organisation can focus on championing civil society issues.


Judith Mtsewu

Judith Mtsewu, Knowledge Manager


Judith holds degrees and postgraduate qualifications in social sciences (UWC), and various leadership and management qualifications (Wits University and GIBS). Judith has worked in civil society (gender justice and media and human rights), academia and local government. Before CAFSA, she was the Deputy Director: Planning, Reporting and Monitoring at the City of Johannesburg.


In 2009, she was a research contributor to the regional research on Gender in Local Government, titled “Swaziland: Gender in Local Government’, and in 2010, she received an award: “SA’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government (Tomorrow’s Leaders) from CEO Magazine. For two consecutive years, she made the Mail and Guardian list as one of 300 Young People to Invite to Lunch.

Louise Denysschen, Business Development Manager


Louise has a diverse background, from creating theatre for social change initiatives, co-ordinating NGO events around social and economic issues to business development within the training and development sector. The common thread throughout her career has been a focus on social change. Besides her formal work, Louise has initiated numerous projects with the aim of social cohesion and constructive discourse.


Louise now brings together her experience as well as her facilitation skills to assist with CAFSA’s business development and strategy. Louise holds a diploma in Adult Basic Education and Training as well as certifications in facilitation and group work processes.



Winnie Tlou, Bookkeeper


Winnie Mapula Tlou joined CAFSA in September of 2017 as the company bookkeeper. Winnie comes to CAFSA with solid experience after previously working for corporates in the banking sector and recently from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA). Winnie is a member of the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA).


Academically, she holds a BCom Accounting Degree from the University of Limpopo, an Advanced Certificate in Taxation and a Certificate in Business Management, both from NWU Potchefstroom. Winnie also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Programme Management from the MANCOSA Business School. Winnie’s passion for finances is driven by her desire to see organisations’ finances grow from strength to strength.


Nzwaki 1

Nzwaki Hlebo, Office Support

Nzwaki holds an N6 certificate in Management Assistance. Before joining CAFSA she worked at the Wits fees office as an Administration Assistant during registration. She joined CAFSA in November 2010 as an Office Assistant and is an integral part of the CAFSA team, her duties include cleaning and helping with filing and from time to time she helps with CAFSA volunteering events.
