#VolunteersActFirst – SANBS

The theme of this year’s International Volunteer Day, “Volunteers Act First. Here. Everywhere.” is an opportunity to raise awareness on the role that volunteers play as first responders in times of crisis.

To take this conversation forward, Charities Aid Foundation Southern Africa has chosen to highlights and interview first-responder organisations in South Africa.

Our second interview is with South African National Blood Service (SANBS)

What is the mission of your organisation?

SANBS provides an essential service within South Africa and is rated amongst the best in the world in the provision of blood and blood products, research and training provided.

SANBS operates across South Africa with the exclusion of the Western Cape, and is further regarded as a major role player in the provision of support to countries in the SADC region.

Our key purpose is to save patients’ lives.

Vision: “To be a cornerstone of healthcare services in South Africa, through the gift of life.”

Mission: The mission of SANBS is to provide all patients with sufficient, safe, quality blood products and medical services related to blood transfusion in an equitable, cost-effective manner.


What role does your organisation play in responding to disasters? 

SANBS ensures that there is a safe and sufficient blood supply available to patients in need.  There are blood banks and emergency fridges in both private and public hospitals which ensures access to emergency blood products should they be required.


Which disasters in South Africa has your organisation recently been involved with? 

SANBS deals with daily trauma matters in various disciplines of healthcare. The majority of the blood is issued to patients receiving chronic blood transfusions as well as women during childbirth complications.


What challenges does your organisation face as first-responders during disasters? 

There needs to be a sufficient supply of safe blood available, and less than 1% of the population currently donates blood. This potentially puts strain on the blood supply, especially during school and university holidays as over 30% of the blood is donated by people under the age of 25 and these individuals usually donate at their schools and universities.


What role do volunteers play within your organisation? 

Every single blood donor is a volunteer and do this on a voluntary non-remunerated basis.  Over 480 000 blood donors supply over 824 000 units of blood every year.  The donors are also represented on our donor committees which are made up from volunteers.  The donor committees form a key part of the SANBS corporate governance structure.  SANBS also hosts a voluntary worker programme where members of the public can assist at blood drives and donor centres.


Please provide three key ways that individuals/companies/government organisation can assist in meaningful ways to ensure a better supply of blood in South Africa?

  1. To donate blood on a regular basis.  This will ensure a sustainable blood supply nationally. 
  2. Arrange a blood drive at your place of work, church, school or community centre.
  3. Encourage your fellow South Africans to donate blood.

What advice would you give to volunteers who wish to give blood?

  1. You need to be between the ages of 16 – 65 to donate blood for the first time
  2. You need to weigh more than 50kg
  3. You need to lead a safe lifestyle
  4. You need to be good health
  5. You need to consider your blood safe for transfusion

Business Development Manager (BDM) Position at CAF Southern Africa

An opportunity has arisen for CAFSA to recruit a BDM, in order to support its Growth Strategy.

CAFSA occupies a unique position, as we consult to the corporate sector and support and strengthen civil society. CAFSA is in the process of transitioning from a traditionally Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), into a Social Enterprise Organisation (SEO), in accordance with its new Growth and Expansion Strategy.

While this position will be an opportunity for the successful applicant to gain experience in both sectors and have the chance to contribute to the important work of promoting philanthropy and effective social investment, the main focus of the role, will be to present and sell new CAFSA products and services to the corporate sector in support of the non-profit arm of the organisation. Both the NPO and SEO will co-exist, under the CAFSA umbrella.

CAFSA is a member of a global alliance of CAF offices and the successful applicant would be exposed to a vast body of international knowledge.

The successful applicant will be located in the Business Development Department of the organisation, will report to the CEO, and be responsible for the following:


Business Development Strategy

The BDM will be required to review, input and consolidate CAFSA’s current business development strategy, with a view to client retention, acquisition and growing the current client pipeline, in line with the SEO, business and sales imperatives, aligned to the Growth Strategy. This is essentially, a sales role.


Business Development Pipeline

The BDM will be required to review, strengthen and considerably grow the existing client pipeline, as well as cross-selling and up-selling, with current CAFSA clients.


Acquisition of new clients

The Business Development Manager will be required to significantly grow a new pool of corporate clients, for CAFSA.


Identification and growth of strategic alliances and partnerships for CAFSA, and diversified revenue streams

In accordance with CAFSA’s Business Development Strategy, the BDM will be required to identify additional strategic alliances and partners, in support of CAFSA’s expansion strategy.


Skills and Competencies for Success

The Business Development Manager will have senior level leadership, marketing and management experience and will demonstrate:

  • High-level strategic thinking and planning skills with a focus on integrating CAFSA’s fiscal and development goals;
  • Excellent marketing, sales, communication, external relations, advocacy, motivational, co-ordination and leadership skills necessary to ensure the success of a results-orientated Social Investment Programme;
  • A high level of personal motivation, initiative, energy and creativity;
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills;
  • The ability to motivate, mentor, inspire and lead dedicated staff;
  • Networks in the business, government and non-profit sectors, and the ability to work effectively with corporate and donor representatives at senior levels;
  • An understanding of social investment and donor dynamics, the funding and development environment, and the capacity to strategically position CAFSA within the national and international donor-investor context;
  • Skills to encourage and build collaborative relationships within the CAFSA client base, the NGO sector, the public, external stakeholders and internal stakeholders;
  • The ability to conceptualise and oversee budgets, and to provide oversight of donor funding; and
  • Recognise the values of CAFSA, understand its role in South Africa, the region, and internationally. This will include CAFSA’s responsibilities to the people, communities, businesses and organisations in the Southern African region.

Technical skills and knowledge

  • High level of numeracy

The successful candidate will be required to source revenue for CAFSA, in an amount of R3 million, during the first 18 months.


Type of Employment

CAFSA will be offering a three year contract, renewable, depending upon targets being met.



A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Commerce or Social Science is the minimum requirement. An Honours Degree, is preferable.


Employment Equity

South African citizens will be given preference.

CAFSA favours employment equity principles, in its recruitment and procurement practices.


Salary Range: R650k with commission structure
